Why Spain Needs More RegTech Adoption
A founder perspective on the structural reasons Spanish institutions still under-invest in regulatory technology — and what would change that.

The starting point
Spain has world-class supervisors, a deep banking sector and a fast-growing FinTech scene. Yet adoption of regulatory technology lags behind comparable European markets. The reason is rarely a lack of awareness — it is a combination of risk-aversion, fragmented vendor markets and a tendency to treat compliance as a cost centre rather than an operational discipline.
What needs to change
- Treat RegTech as core infrastructure, not as an annual project.
- Build internal data foundations before buying tools.
- Measure compliance operations the same way we measure payments or fraud — with throughput, false positive rate, time to resolution.
- Engage with supervisors early when piloting new technology.
Where the opportunity is biggest
AML transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, KYC orchestration, payment data quality (ISO 20022) and digital identity are the areas where Spanish institutions can move fastest and gain the most in operational resilience.
